Myth abounds in Campania. Icarus plunged to his death in the Campi Flegrei and Aeneas consulted the Cuman Sybil before entering Hades via Lago d’Averno (lake Avernus). To the south, sirens lured sailors to their deaths in the sparkling waters of Sorrento. Campania is an ancient land of high drama and disorientating contrasts. From the seething streets of in-your-face Naples to the spectacular scenery of the Amalfi Coast, the landscape is as varied as it is compelling.

MOUNT VESUVIUS
With its height of 1281 metres is the only active volcano on the European mainland. Since it exploded into history in AD79, burying Pompeii and Herculaneum and pushing the coastline out several kilometres, it has erupted more than 30 times. The most devastating of these was in 1631, the most recent in 1944. And while there’s little evidence to suggest any imminent activity, observers worry that the current lull is the lungest in the past 500 years.
POMPEII
Pompeii remained mostly untouched until 1748, when a group of explorers looking for ancient artifacts arrived in Campania and began to dig. They found that the ashes had acted as a marvelous preservative: Underneath all that dust, Pompeii was almost exactly as it had been 2,000 years before. Its buildings were intact. Skeletons were frozen right where they’d fallen. Everyday objects and household goods littered the streets. Later archaeologists even uncovered jars of preserved fruit and loaves of bread!
